June 14th marks three years since the crime of the sinking of the Adriana by a Coast Guard vessel, sending over 600 refugees to their deaths. It was the greatest racist crime in the Mediterranean since World War II, with the New Democracy government and the Coast Guard tearing apart the right to asylum and the rescue of people in danger at sea.
They are murderers! It is time for the trial of the 21 Coast Guard officers to finally take place in the Naval Court. They must go to prison to put an end to their crimes in Pylos, Chios, and Evros, with their murderous pushbacks at the borders. We will not let them cover up the crime by crudely shifting the blame onto the victims themselves, just as they are doing in the cases of Tempi and Violanta.
Refugees and migrants, persecuted by wars in countries like Iran and Palestine—with the genocide in Gaza—are welcome. Open borders for refugees, not fences and concentration camps, not extermination by denying them homes, healthcare, and schools for their children.
The New Democracy government is using racism to pave the way for the far right and fascists; it is their mainstay in the face of the impending collapse.
It is targeting Javed Aslam, president of the Pakistani Community of Greece, “PakistanCommunity Of Greece Unity,” by revoking his asylum after 30 years in Greece, during which he participated in the struggle that led to the imprisonment of Nazi murderers and defended the rights of immigrants. On 19 of June, he is summoned for a supplementary interview following his hearing before the asylum committee, which took place on 15th of May.
It threatens to evict the PROSFYGIKA housing area in Ambelokipi, throwing 400 residents out onto the street, and to let the hunger strikers Aristides Hantzis and Suzon Dopagne die.
It is paving the way for the orphans of the neo-Nazis of Golden Dawn, who are carrying out racist attacks such as those in Ambelokipi against Filipino workers and against trans people in Kallithea and Peristeri.
We have the power to crush the government and the fascists. On March 28, from the U.S. and rebellious Minneapolis to London, Paris, Rome, and Athens, millions rose up against racism and war, pushing back against Trump and the far right everywhere. Orbán lost the government that spearheaded racism in Europe.
We call on trade unions, the left, student associations, immigrant communities, grassroots movements, and movements defending the rights of immigrants and refugees, as well as people in the arts and humanities, to join this struggle en masse and in unity.
