pylos14 JUNE ENGL NEWThe acquittal of the 9 survivors of the Pylos shipwreck is a victory for solidarity and a slap in the face of prime minister Mitsotakis

The acquittal of the 9 refugee survivors in the Kalamata trial is a resounding slap in the face of  prime minister’s Mitsotakis methods to cover up murderous policies at the borders. As in the case of the forest fire in Dadia, the refugees who were targeted by the prime minister himself as arsonists and acquitted, so now they were solemnly acquitted when he had targeted them as traffickers.
The court's decision was a victory for the solidarity movement that stood by the 9 refugees and became the voice of the dead and their families. The court issued a damning decision for the government itself, finding the prosecution unacceptable and ruled that there is a lack of Greek jurisdiction over the shipwreck and the criminal organisation as it took place in international waters. It clearly declared the 9 innocent of illegal entry into the country and trafficking.
KEERFA salutes the trade unions and the solidarity movement who turned out en masse outside the court in Kalamata and confronted the brutality of the minster of Public Order’s Chrysochoidis Police.
Together with the Pakistani Community of Greece, the survivors and relatives of the victims, the Anti-Fascist Movement of Kalamata and the trade unions that went on strike at the call of ADEDY, we turned the persecution into a humiliating defeat for the government and the racist policies at the borders that led to the crime in Pylos.
We stand unwaveringly with the refugees for open borders for refugees and to punish the government and FRONTEX for the murder of 650 refugees in Pylos.
The government releases Michaloliakos and the neo-Nazis of Golden Dawn, while the movement releases the 9 refugees.
With this momentum we go on to the next big station, the battle for justice for the victims of Pylos at the Maritime Court.
We call for a nationwide mobilization on the one year anniversary of the shipwreck of Pylos, on June 14 with a demonstration, at 7pm, at the Propylaea, as well as in other cities and outside the Greek embassies.
